About Blood Sugar Calculator

What do you mean by blood sugar?

The major sugar present in blood is called blood sugar, or glucose. It provides energy to muscles, organs, and the nervous system. The small intestine, liver, and pancreas regulate glucose absorption and storage.

After eating, glucose floods the bloodstream. The pancreas releases insulin, which stores excess glucose as glycogen in the liver. When needed, the liver converts glycogen back to glucose through a process called glycogenolysis.

What is the range of blood sugar?

Fasting Blood Sugar: Less than 100 mg/dL.

Post-Meal: Less than 140 mg/dL (2 hours after eating).

Before meals, levels usually range between 70–90 mg/dL. Extended fasting may not drop levels below 60 mg/dL for most individuals.

How is glucose formed in our body?

Glucose mainly comes from carbohydrate-rich foods like bread, fruits, and potatoes. During digestion, enzymes break food into glucose, which is absorbed into the bloodstream through the intestines. Insulin helps transport glucose to cells for energy.

What are blood sugar levels?

Blood sugar levels indicate the glucose concentration in your body. These levels fluctuate throughout the day, especially after meals. In diabetes, these variations are more pronounced, requiring regular monitoring to manage the condition and prevent complications like nerve damage or vision loss.

Relation between blood glucose and diabetes

After eating, blood sugar rises, then falls as insulin transports glucose into cells. In diabetes:

  • Type 1 Diabetes: The body does not produce enough insulin.
  • Type 2 Diabetes: Cells resist insulin, forcing the pancreas to overproduce it.

When unmanaged, blood sugar levels remain high, leading to complications.

Methods of Blood Sugar Calculation

Blood sugar levels are calculated using various methods:

  1. Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS): Measured after 8+ hours of fasting. FBS = Blood Glucose (mg/dL)
  2. Random Blood Sugar (RBS): Checked at any time of the day. RBS = Blood Glucose (mg/dL)
  3. Postprandial Blood Sugar (PPBS): Measured 2 hours after eating. PPBS = Blood Glucose (mg/dL)
